LA North: Five things from the weekend

1. The Valencia girls' basketball team won the Burroughs Tournament behind a double-double performance by Lauren Spargo in the championship game. Spargo scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds in her team’s 62-54 win over St. Bernard’s in the championship game. For good measure, she had five steals in the game. Spargo averaged 15 points per game and earned most valuable player of the tournament.

2. The Montclair Prep girls' basketball team won the Marymount Holiday Classic with its best player in foul trouble and playing limited minutes in the first half of the championship game. Lindsay Anderson scored 10 points and had eight rebounds in Montclair Prep’s 46-30 win over Marymount in the championship game of the tournament. Montclair Prep’s Alex Taylor, the team’s leading scorer, picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter and had to sit on the bench. She finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

3. The Kennedy of Granada Hills girls' basketball team won the Reseda Winter Shootout on a last-second shot by Tkia Clay. Kennedy won the championship game, 62-60, over host Reseda. Clay put back her own missed shot with 3.2 seconds left to give her team a two-point lead. Clay scored 25 points in the game, 17 in the second half.

4. The Royal boys' soccer team won the Valley Kickoff Classic in a shootout against Marmonte League rival Calabasas. Royal sophomore goalkeeper Branden Fuller made seven saves as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation. Royal won the game and the tournament championship, 3-2, on penalty kicks. Alex Wardle, Jordan Strassner and Hector Vitela scored for Royal in the penalty kicks portion of the game.

5. Calabasas football coach Larry Edwards resigned after two seasons with the team. Edwards was making his second stint as the Calabasas football coach. He was 4-16 as the Calabasas football coach over the past two seasons. His team beat Simi Valley, 33-7, on Oct. 1, snapping a Calabasas 53-game Marmonte League losing streak.
