Inland Empire: Boys' basketball Games of the Week

Etiwanda (16-0, 2-0) at Upland (12-4, 1-1), Friday, 6:30 p.m. – Upland, ranked No. 5 in the Inland Empire by ESPNLA, may have got caught looking ahead to No. 1 Etiwanda, losing a Baseline League game Tuesday against Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos, 68-63. This game will feature last season’s league co-most valuable players, Upland guard John Gilliam and Etiwanda wing Byron Wesley.

Rialto Eisenhower (9-6, 1-0) at Redlands East Valley (14-3, 1-0), Friday, 6 p.m.– Eisenhower is the three-time defending Citrus Belt League champion but they figure to be tested by the size of Redlands East Valley, led by Paulin Mpawe, a 6-foot-9 post player who signed with Pepperdine. Mpawe scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds Tuesday in a 96-92 victory against crosstown rival Redlands.

La Verne Damien (14-1, 1-0) at Chino Hills (14-3, 1-0), Friday, 6:30 p.m. – Chino Hills is the four-time defending Sierra League champion but the Huskies will have their hands full against Damien and 6-7 junior forward Chris Reyes, a first-team all-league pick last season who is averaging 16.4 points and nine rebounds.

Victorville Victor Valley (14-3) at Villa Park (12-5), Saturday, 4 p.m.– Victor Valley started the week ranked No. 5 in Division 2AA and No. 6 in the I.E. by ESPNLA, but that was before they lost by 30 points Wednesday night against Desert Sky League rival Victorville Silverado. Villa Park, the host of this Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase, is ranked No. 7 in Division 2AA. Murrieta Valley, ranked No. 3 in the I.E, plays Orange Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Fontana Summit (11-6) vs. Los Angeles Windward (11-5) at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. – Summit will get an up-close view of 6-6 senior forward Wesley Saunders in this late game at the Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Basketball Classic. Saunders has committed to Harvard. Windward is ranked No. 3 in Div. 4AA. Upland plays Reseda Cleveland in the preceding game.

Looking ahead:

Los Osos is hosting its annual Martin Luther King Day Classic on Monday and it's a great chance to see many of the I.E.'s top teams at one venue. The nine-game schedule is as follows: Claremont vs. Mira Loma Alta Loma at 8 a.m., Monrovia vs. La Puente Bishop Amat at 9:30 a.m., Twentynine Palms vs. Fontana A.B. Miller at 11 a.m., Fontana Jurupa Hills vs. Glendora at 12:30 p.m., Damien vs. San Dimas at 2 p.m., and Santa Monica vs. Eastvale Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m.; Etiwanda vs. Ventura, 5 p.m.; Los Osos vs. Ontario, 6:30 p.m.; Chino Hills vs. Rancho Cucamonga, 8.
