LA South: Polee loses shirt
before Westchester wins game

3/11/2010

Not even a small wardrobe malfunction could throw off Westchester Tuesday night in their state playoff opener against Ontario Colony.

Before the game, when coaches passed out team uniforms, top prospect Dwayne Polee’s usual number 0 was missing.

“Maybe it got lost in the dryer or something,” he said.

He switched to No. 11 and it didn’t have any effect on his game. He had 18 points and four steals in the 77-42 rout.

“I’m going to stick with 11 now,” Polee said.

Coach Ed Azzam said the number switch was not an attempt to pull a fast one on opposing coaches, who often game plan around stopping the 6-6 forward.

“We weren’t trying to trick anyone,” he said. “When we were handing out the uniforms, his wasn’t there.”

It not as if Westchester needs to trick anyone to gain an edge. The Comets, who play Santa Monica in the second round Thursday night at Westchester, have won their five playoff games by an average of 31.1 points, showing few signs that they are feeling pressure in trying to defend their state Division I title.

“This team has been there,” Azzam said. “We have nine seniors. We know what to expect at this point in the season.
