Long Beach Poly boys and Brea girls are marquee divisions' top seeds

LOS ALAMITOS -- Even though Mater Dei moved past Long Beach Poly in the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings following the Jackrabbits' 58-53 loss to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman at the Nike Extravaganza, the out-of-state setback had little effect on the rankings that determined the Southern Section playoff pairings.

Long Beach Poly (24-1) was the top-seeded team in boys' Division 1AA, and Mater Dei (22-2) was No. 2 in the pairings that were released on Sunday. Corona Centennial (23-3) and Etiwanda (25-2) were the Nos. 3 and 4 teams in the section's marquee bracket.Murrieta Valley (23-3) is the No. 5 team.

Other top-seeded teams in their respective divisions are Loyola, Ventura, Peninsula, Price, Orange Lutheran, Oaks Christian, Flintridge Prep, Sierra Canyon, Valley Torah and Padre Pio Academy.

Games begin Wednesday at 7 p.m. for boys, and Thursday for girls.

Not surprisingly, Brea Olinda (25-0), Long Beach Poly (22-2) and Mater Dei (24-1) were seeded 1-2-3 in girls Division 1AA; they are ranked 1-2-3 in the nation, too, in the Powerade Fab 50 for ESPN Rise.

That division essentially amounts to a national championship tournament. Canyon Springs (24-2) is the fourth-seeded team and Cajon (27-1) is No. 5.

Other top-seeded teams in other divisions are Edison, Rialto, Harvard-Westlake, Santa Maria St. Joseph, Orange Lutheran, Windward, Oaks Christian, Frazier Mountain, Mesa Grande Academy and Rolling Hills Prep.
