State Basketball: Div. V girls, St. Bernard vs. Pinewood

At Power Balance Pavilion, Sacramento

Matchup: Playa del Rey St. Bernard (24-14) vs. Los Altos Pinewood (27-5), Friday, 3:30 p.m.

How they got here: St. Bernard beat Oxnard’s Santa Clara, 60-45, in the Southern California Regional final. The Vikings lost to Santa Clara, 52-49, in the Southern Section Division 5AA championship a week earlier. Pinewood beat St. Joseph Notre Dame, 41-36, in the Northern California Regional final. The Panthers have won 12 games in a row, including 45-44 over Eastside College Prep in the Central Coast Section Division 5 championship.

Key players: St. Bernard has a legitimate twin-tower pairing in senior Kacy Swain and freshman Lajauna Drummer. Drummer leads the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game and in rebounding at 11.9 per game. Swain, who’s headed to UCLA, is averaging a double-double as well with 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Freshman Chyanne Butler, all 5 feet 1 of her, is second on the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game and has made 60 3-pointers. She is shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc and leads the team with 3.6 assists per game.

Pinewood has three players who are averaging double figures in scoring. Senior Hailie Eackles is averaging 23.3 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game. Senior Miranda Seto is second on the team with 10.6 points per game. Senior Jenna McLoughlin is averaging 10.0 points per game.

What to expect: This will be a classic matchup of youth vs. experience. St. Bernard has a pair of talented freshmen in Drummer and Butler. But their inexperience got them in foul trouble against Santa Clara in the Southern Section Division 5AA championship game. Pinewood has senior leadership that led to a pair of blowout wins in the first two rounds of the Northern California Regional playoffs.
