L.A. North: Oaks Chr. sheds some lights

By Tim Haddock

The game between Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure was interrupted for 30 minutes when the lights went out in the stadium. Oaks Christian was up 27-24, but had to punt, giving St. Bonaventure the ball with a little under seven minutes to play in the game.

The ball was downed on the St. Bonaventure 1-yard line when the lights went out. Oaks Christian scored on a safety when the lights were restored and went on to win by 12 points.

But it was clear that St. Bonaventure coach Todd Therrien was upset with the way the game ended and with the lights going out when they did.

Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell said what he thinks happened is that someone hit the wrong switch in the booster concession stand and knocked out the stadium lights on accident.

Apparently the light switch for the stadium and the light switch for the concession area are next to each other in an equipment room.

“We think someone hit the wrong switch,” Redell said, adding that a lock box has been placed on the stadium light switch to prevent future accidents from occurring.

Redell also said he has been receiving a number of “hate e-mails” from St. Bonaventure fans. He said if Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure meet again in the playoffs, he wants to play the game in the afternoon, when there won’t be a need for lights, or on a neutral field.
