Montclair defends title at Atascadero tournament

The Montclair boys' basketball team continued its record start to the season Thursday with a 60-57 victory in the championship game of the Atascadero tournament.
For the second consecutive season, the Cavaliers (13-0) beat the tournament hosts by three points in the final.
Atascadero guard Rob Berwick had a good look at the basket with about 10 seconds remaining, but his three-point attempt went off the rim, according to this report in the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
Montclair senior guard Devyn Sampson scored a season-high 24 points and contributed 13 rebounds en route to winning tournament MVP honors. Back-court mate Kevin Fregoso had 12 points and seven assists and was named to the all-tournament first team.
At the Holiday Hardwood Classic at Oaks Christian HS:
Behind a career-high 18 points from senior guard Dominique Walker, the Etiwanda boys’ basketball team advanced to tonight’s championship game in Westlake Village.
The Eagles (13-1) will meet tournament host Oaks Christian at 8:30 p.m.
Etiwanda took a 14-7 lead after the opening quarter against Santa Monica in the semifinals, stretched it to 11 by the end of three and ultimately advanced with a 56-52 victory. Etiwanda sophomore guard Jordan McLaughlin contributed 12 points, only the third time this season has hasn’t led the team in scoring.
Oaks Christian (10-2) is led by senior point guard Chass Bryan (16.3 ppg) and junior guard Jackson Miller (11.7), setting the stage for what should be an interesting back-court matchup.
At the San Bernardino Kiwanis tournament at Arroyo Valley HS:
Devon Alexander swished an 18-foot jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining and Summit defeated Cajon, 54-52, in the semifinal game.
The SkyHawks (11-4) will meet Las Vegas (Nev.) Centennial in the championship game tonight at 7:30.
Cajon had rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the score with 10.5 seconds on the clock
Centennial (10-1) advanced with a 77-37 victory against Redlands East Valley.
At the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic at Rancho Bernardo HS:
Murrieta Valley advanced to tonight’s championship game in the Mayor’s Division with a 70-50 victory Thursday night against Agua Fria (Ariz.) in San Diego.
The Nighthawks are scheduled to play Sierra Canyon from Chatsworth at 6:40 p.m. Sierra Canyon is led by junior point guard Jahmel Taylor (21.3 ppg), already sporting a half dozen scholarship offers.
Murrieta Valley (11-1) will counter with senior forward Darius Butler (20.8 ppg), who had 27 points and 11 rebounds in the semifinal win, and senior guard Reid Shackelford, who is averaging 18.1 points a game.
At the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at Cathedral City HS:
Two teams from the I.E. advanced to the finals in their respective divisions.
Riverside King (10-2) won all three of its pool-play games in the Classic Division and will play Pleasant Grove from the Northern California city of Elk Grove today at 3:45 p.m.
Corona Santiago (9-3) put together an impressive run through its pool in the National Division and will meet L.A. Crenshaw in the title game at 5:30.
