L.A. South: Boys' basketball Top 10

By Blair Angulo

The south Los Angeles County boys' basketball top 10 power rankings:

1. Loyola (11-2)
Losing the first two Mission League games wasn't how the Cubs wanted to start. Still, it doesn't figure to be the end of their title hopes. This week: vs. Chaminade, Mon.; vs. Harvard-Westlake, Fri.; vs. Notre Dame, Sat.

2. Long Beach Poly (11-1)
The Jackrabbits have been idle since before Christmas, and the layoff might be a good thing for the Moore League favorites. They travel to Seattle next week. This week: vs. Lakewood, Fri.

3. Gardena Serra (13-1)
The Cavaliers are deep and talented, and the favorites in the Del Rey League. Daddy Ugbede and Dakarai Tucker led the charge down in San Diego over the weekend. This week: vs. Cathedral, Wed.; at Bishop Montgomery, Fri.; vs. Price in Cochran Classic at LACES, Sat.

4. St. John Bosco (11-2)
The Braves are the dark horse pick in the Trinity League thanks to the additions of brothers Isaac Hamilton, a junior, and Daniel, a sophomore. Lately it's been the younger brother flashing his scoring skills. This week: at Servite, Wed.; at Santa Margarita, Fri.

5. Bishop Montgomery (13-2)
Victories against Westchester, Taft, Serra and Price make up an impressive résumé for the Knights. This week: at La Salle, Wed.; vs. Gardena Serra, Fri.

6. Price (11-5)
Good balance for coach Michael Lynch with athletic forward Skylar Spencer inside and shooters Chance Murray, Khalil Johnson and Trey Dickerson keeping opponents honest from the outside. This week: vs. Gardena Serra in Cochran Classic at LACES, Sat.

7. Windward (12-5)
Loyola Marymount is getting a good one in Wildcats leading scorer Nick Stover. But Windward is more than just a one-man show, with point guard Jordan Wilson and freshman big Mason Shepherd pulling their weight. This week: vs. Brentwood, Fri.; vs. Compton, Sat.

8. La Verne Lutheran (12-4)
Arizona-bound forward Grant Jerrett and junior Eric Cooper Jr. compliment each other well. Sixth-man Cameron Osorno could very well start This week: at Westminster, Mon.; vs. Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick at Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass., Sat.

9. Damien (13-1)
St. Mary's-bound big man Chris Reyes is averaging a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds) per game. And when teams zone in on Reyes inside, wing Jared Dizon is lethal from the perimeter. This week: at Claremont, Wed.; vs. South Hills, Fri.

10. Compton (7-7)
The mediocre record doesn't really tell the story here, with losses coming to the likes of state-title contenders Loyola, Long Beach Poly, La Verne Lutheran and San Jose Archbishop Mitty. This week: vs. Long Beach Wilson, Wed.; at Long Beach Cabrillo, Fri.; at Windward, Sat.

Ten more, in alphabetic order: Dorsey (13-5), Fairfax (8-5), Gahr (11-5), Glendora (12-4), Leuzinger (10-4), Mira Costa (13-3), Muir (13-1), Peninsula (11-4), Santa Monica (9-5), Westchester (9-4)
