LA South: Games of the week
By Blair Angulo
Harbor City Narbonne will be dealing with an angry Long Beach Poly team Friday night.
Poly will be seeking a revenge of sorts following last week's shocking 32-7 home loss to Ventura St. Bonaventure. The Jackrabbits fell 11 spots -- from No. 5 to No. 16 -- in the latest ESPNLA.com high school rankings.
It's a test for Poly's players, and not just because Narbonne (1-0) is a formidable opponent. Forgetting an early-season loss is difficult enough. Try ignoring the fact that your state title hopes are probably gone.
"Right now we can't talk about 15-0, state title or CIF," Waller said. "Right now we just have to go game by game."
That starts with Narbonne on Friday night.
For the Gauchos, the game will be the first of a brutal three-week stretch. Narbonne, which won its opener 41-0 at Southgate South East, has meetings with Mira Costa and No. 5 Gardena Serra after this week.
Three more to see:
* Mira Costa (0-1) at No. 5 Serra (2-0), Tonight -- Mira Costa's defense had a stellar showing in a 10-7 loss to No. 21 Loyola and stud back Jared Baker two weeks ago. But Serra might have too much offensive firepower for the well-rested Mustangs.
* Compton (2-0) at Dominguez (1-1), Friday -- Emotional rivalry games are usually tight no matter the differences in talent. A close game favors a Dominguez squad that's tested itself against tough competition (Encino Crespi and Bishop Amat) the first two weeks.
