LA North: The Top 10
By Tim Haddock
1. (1) Westlake (5-0)
Westlake had an easy time against Simi Valley in a 56-6 blowout. The Warriors were up 42-0 at halftime and most of the starters sat out the second half. One note of interest: Nine receivers caught at least one pass against Simi Valley. Next up for Westlake is Moorpark.
2. (4) Crespi (5-1)
Each game is a little more impressive than the last for Crespi. Every week, it seems quarterback Kenny Stenhouse is breaking a school record. In Crespi’s 53-47 win over Woodland Hills Taft, Stenhouse set a school record with six touchdown passes. Next up for Crespi is Bishop Amat.
3. (3) Alemany (6-0)
Alemany is coming off a 53-0 shutout over Beverly Hills. Quarterback Vernon Adams threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. Alemany gets two weeks to prepare for its Serra League opener on Oct. 22 against Crespi. Should be a good one.
4. (5) St. Bonaventure (4-1)
St. Bonaventure had all parts of its game working against Newbury Park in a 42-14 win. Running back Shaun Wick scored two rushing touchdowns. Cody Kurz returned a fumble for a touchdown on defense. Chris Cook took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Next up for St. Bonaventure is Agoura.
5. (2) Valencia (4-1) Valencia lost for the first time this season, 39-24, to Loyola. Running back Steven Manfro scored only two touchdowns in this one. That brings his season total to 21 in five games, but it is the first time this season he hasn’t scored at least four touchdowns in a game. Next up for Valencia is Saugus in the Foothill League opener.
6. (6) Thousand Oaks (4-1)
Thousand Oaks beat Agoura, 21-12, but lost running back Rickey Minyard to a foot injury on the first play of the game. There has been no word if he’ll be ready for Friday night’s game. Next up for Thousand Oaks is Oaks Christian.
7. (7) Moorpark (3-2)
Moorpark rolled over Calabasas, 34-7. Quarterback Grant Rohach barely broke a sweat in this one. He was 8-of-13 for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Jerry Shumway caught four passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Next up for Moorpark is undefeated Westlake.
8. (8) Oaks Christian (3-2)
Oaks Christian clobbered Royal, 50-20, behind a nearly flawless effort by quarterback Richie Harrington. He was 22-of-27 passsing for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Carlos Mendoza chipped in with two rushing touchdowns. Next up for Oaks Christian is Thousand Oaks.
9. (9) Chaminade (5-0)
Chaminade kept its undefeated record alive with a 31-27 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Serra League play starts for Chaminade against Harvard-Westlake on Friday night. The real test comes on Nov. 5 when Chaminade meets Gardena Serra.
10. (NR) Canyon (5-0)
After a convincing 36-3 win over Dos Pueblos, Canyon ran its record to 5-0. Quarterback Jonathan Jerozal is turning into a reliable signal caller for Canyon. The Cowboys also have one of the strongest legs in high school football in kicker Mohammad Roknipour. He set a school record with a 57-yard field goal against Dos Pueblos.
