Inland Empire: No. 13 Vista Murrieta 45, Chaparral 17
By Dan Arritt
MURRIETA -- Revenge is the best medicine.
Vista Murrieta still had its loss to Temecula Chaparral in last season’s Inland Division championship game fresh in its mind Thursday night when the teams met in a Southwestern League opener at Vista Murrieta High.
The Broncos left no doubt they are the team to beat this season after taking Chaparral apart in a 45-17 victory.
Vista Murrieta quarterback Derrick Brown threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 67 yards and two more scores and also caught the first touchdown pass in his football career.
His 18-yard touchdown reception off a trick play extended Vista Murrieta’s lead to 31-14 with 5 minutes 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Brown talks about the play in the preceding video.
Temecula running back Darius Guillory carried the ball 18 times for 121 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Matt Morin threw for 237 yards and a touchdown.
Chaparral, which began the season as one of the top-ranked teams in the state, fell to 1-5. The Broncos improved to 5-1, including 1-0 in league play.
