OC, IE: Mission Viejo wins hotly contested Diablo Inferno
By Martin Henderson
Turns out that Mission Viejo can do more than play football. The Diablos boys' basketball team won its own Diablo Inferno boys' basketball tournament over the weekend by beating Upland in the finals, 59-54, behind the play of Isaac Neilson and Evan Keller.
Upland (3-1) won last year's tournament. It's the first time Mission (4-0) has won its own championship since 2007, but it had to work hard to do it, withstanding Upland's fullcourt pressure that created 17 turnovers, but also caused the aggressive team foul trouble. They committed 26 fouls and Mission made 16 of 27 from the free throw line. It helped stave off a comeback in which Upland cut a 10-point deficit to three in less than two minutes, and had the chance to tie the score with 34 seconds remaining.
Myles Pearson, who scored 14, missed the game-tying attempt from the corner, and Mission closed it out with a pair of free throws.
Neilson had 19 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Zeller had 10 points and eight rebounds.
