LA North: Coates picks his college

By Sean Ceglinsky

After months of deliberation, Reggie Coates has finally made his college decision. On Tuesday morning, the 6-foot-2 and 230-plus senior from Encino Crespi High verbally committed to play football at Nevada, according to Celts' director of marketing and public relations Paul Rawate.

Coates ranked among the team leaders in a number of different statistical categories, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. In 12 games, he had 61 tackles, 41 of the solo variety. Coates also had finished with four sacks, four forced fumbles, two for recoveries, and a pair of pass deflections.

His play on the defensive line late in the season was instrumental in helping guide the Celts to a berth in postseason play. Ultimately, however, Crespi came up short and lost in the Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoff quarterfinals, 40-16, to perennial Southland powerhouse Anaheim Servite.

Coates, who will most likely end up playing linebacker at Nevada, had offers from several other programs, including Colorado State, Iowa State and Tulsa. In fact, his stock recently took a turn for the better. Schools such as Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA and USC expressed interest in him.
