LA North: Chatsworth 4, Birmingham 1
By Tim Haddock
LOS ANGELES – Chatsworth scored twice without a hit in the fifth inning and won a wild CIF City Section semifinal playoff game, 4-1, over Birmingham at USC’s Dedeaux Field on Wednesday.
Down 1-0, Chatsworth loaded the bases in the fifth inning and scored on a squeeze play and a groundout to take a 2-1 lead.
Birmingham starter Kevin Torres hit three Chatsworth batters in a row to load the bases.
Jared Holley, the No. 9 hitter, drove in the first run on a squeeze play that scored Ricky Obando. Steve Karkenny followed with an RBI groundout that scored Kiefer Kofman.
Chatsworth starter Christian Lopez pitched into the fourth inning, but was taken out of the game with two outs and the bases loaded. Reliever Angel Rodriguez struck out Daniel Rivas to end the fourth and held Birmingham scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Birmingham took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Randy Medellin. He knocked in Torres, who led off the inning with a walk.
Torres kept his team in the game for the first five innings. He gave up only one hit in the five innings and struck out three.
But he ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. After giving up two runs and the lead in the fifth inning, Torres gave up another two runs in the sixth.
Raul Camas led of the inning with a single and came around to score on a botched pop-up in front of home plate. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Ernesto Prado hit a towering pop fly between the pitcher’s mound and home plate. Neither catcher Luke Jupp nor third baseman Erick Munoz could make the catch and Camas scored to give Chatsworth a 3-1 lead.
Pinch hitter Chris Carlin knocked in Obando with a one-out single to put Chatsworth up 4-1.
Chatsworth, winners of nine City Section championships, advances to the Division I title game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal involving El Camino Real and San Fernando.
