Division 4 softball: Dos Pueblos 5, Kaiser 0
By Martin Henderson
Hannah Harris struck out 10 to lead Dos Pueblos to the CIF-SS Division 4 title.
IRVINE -- Pitcher Hannah Harris had allowed only one run in 38 innings in the playoffs for Goleta Dos Pueblos, so when her team squeezed home a run in the third inning, the Chargers' faithful had to be feeling pretty good. When they kept scoring, they were feeling downright giddy.
Dos Pueblos won its second Southern Section championship with a 5-0 victory over Fontana Kaiser on Saturday at Barber Park.
Harris (22-9) cruised as Dos Pueblos (22-9) won its seventh in a row. The previous three games were all on the road, including an 11-inning, 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Ocean View and a 4-1 decision at top-seeded Aquinas. She surrendered five hits and struck out 10.
The victory not only denied Kaiser a title, but also the entire city of Fontana, which has never won a softball title.
"She was pretty spectacular," co-coach Lee Harris said of his daughter's performance. "She did an exceptional job of preparing for this. This kid lives for this pressure."
The only time Harris encountered trouble was in the top of the sixth inning when Kaiser's Brittany Regennitter and Destiney Henderson singled with two outs, but a ground ball ended the threat.
"I wasn't really worried, I just tried to take it all in," Harris said. "No point in stressing. It's not going to help."
Harris got the run she needed when she squeezed home Amber Altavilla, who had singled and reached third on a passed ball and wild pitch. Jordan Roberts followed with an RBI single. The Chargers added two more runs in the fourth on Haley Peterson's double and a four-base throwing error on Ashlynd Williams' sacrifice bunt.
Kaiser committed five errors behind pitcher Krystel Gabbard (15-6), who allowed five hits..
"It was an incredible run," Harris said. "We had a calm attitude the whole time. We had fun. We played for the moment, and that's what got us this far."
