Rich Gutierrez takes over as Canyon's football coach

By Tim Haddock

Canyon is one of two football teams in the Foothill League with a new coach for the 2011 season.

Rich Gutierrez takes over for Chris Varner, who guided the Cowboys to the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs last season.

Andy Campbell resigned as head coach of the Golden Valley football team last week. Robert Fisher will be the interim head coach when Golden Valley plays Simi Valley in the season opener on Sept. 2.

Gutierrez inherits a talented and experienced Canyon team that should challenge Valencia for the Foothill League championship this year.

Among the top returners are senior quarterback Jonathon Jerozal and junior wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky.

Gutierrez said Jerozal will have another legitimate threat at receiver with Coley Apsay, one of the top players on the Canyon basketball team. Apsay hasn’t played football since his freshman season, when he and Jerozal were on the same team.

Canyon opens against Burbank Burroughs on Sept. 9.
