The Cannon, Carson's new weapon
By Blair Angulo
Transfer quarterback Kevin McMahon, formerly of South Torrance, is as hyped as any player heading into the football season. And Carson coach Elijah Asante, the beneficiary of McMahon's transfer, is fine with all the fuss ... primarily because he's the biggest believer.
"This dude, man, his nickname is 'The Cannon' for a reason," Asante said. "He's really going to be a shot in the arm."
The Colts needed one after losing All-City first-teamer Justin Alo (2,534 yards passing, 793 rushing, 21 total touchdowns) to graduation. Carson needed someone that could get the ball to standout receiver Darreus Rogers, a USC commit.
As a junior last year, McMahon led South Torrance to a 12-2 record and the Northwest Division title game. He threw for 15 touchdowns and completed 58 percent of his passes.
"He has great leadership ability, great command, great presence," Asante said. "He's 6 feet, 4 inches, 220 pounds. He's got all the intangibles you need."
Carson is a favorite in the City Section this season.
