Sarah Cho of Torrey Pines won the CIF state girls golf championship in a two-hole playoff over Cha Cha Wilhoite of Palm Desert at the Poppy Hills Golf Course at Pebble Beach on Tuesday.

Cho and Wilhoite were the only two golfers to shoot under par in the tournament. Both were 1-under, 71, after 18 holes.

Anne Cheng of Torrance finished in a tie for third with Shawnee Martinez of Enochs with ever-par 72s.

Sophia Chen from Thousand Oaks shot 7-over 79 and was tied for 27th place. Oxnard's Drew Thomas was 12-over and tied for 42nd in the 54-player field.

Torrey Pines won the team portion of the state final by two strokes over Torrance. Three players from Torrance finished in the top 10. Samantha Martin tied for sixth with a 3-over 75. Diana Kim tied for eighth with a 4-over 76.

LA South: Athletes of the week

October, 26, 2010
Ammar Moussa, Arcadia, Sr.

Moussa tied the course record at the Mt. SAC Invitational Team Sweepstakes on Saturday, running the 2.91 miles in 14:24 to guide the Arcadia boys' cross country team to a first-place finish. It was just the latest in a long list of accomplishments for the senior. Moussa won the state title last year and was named Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Teammate Sergio Gonzalez (14:44) came in second while Arcadia's other three runners also finished in the top 20, showing exactly why the Apaches are ranked No. 2 nationally. The group is slated to return to the scene for the preliminaries on Nov. 13.

Anne Cheng, Torrance, So.

Cheng claimed the Ocean League individual girls' golf championship by edging teammate Luciane Lee in a three-hole playoff Wednesday at Lakewood Country Club. The teammates each shot a 1-under-par 73 in the final round, but Cheng birdied the final hole to take the title. Torrance earned five of the league's seven individual berths for the upcoming CIF-SS Northern Regional.
