One of the outstanding girls basketball tournaments of the season begins the first week of the season, and it has produced a scintillating championship game scheduled for Saturday.

The Ladycat Classic will feature the host team Brea Olinda -- No. 2 in the ESPN Fab 50 preseason ranking -- will take on No. 12 Long Beach Poly.

Brea advanced to the finals with a 77-43 victory over Summit in the semifinals as Jeanier Olukemi scored 23 points. Poly did the same with a 68-36 victory over Troy behind Ariya Crook-Williams' 14 points.

As good as those programs are and as high as they are ranked, they are still behind one other local team: Mater Dei, led by Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Jordan Adams, is No. 1.
