NEWHALL -- The Hart boys basketball team erased a 17-point deficit and won its game against Quartz Hill, 78-74, in overtime, in the Hart Holiday Classic at Hart High School on Wednesday night.
Roman Delgado scored all nine of Hart’s points in overtime. He finished with 28 points and made three 3-pointers.
Hart was 21-for-24 from the free-throw line in the second half and overtime. Hart’s John Green made all eight of his free throws in the second half. He scored 15 points, was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and had 10 rebounds.
Quartz Hill’s Luch Gamiz hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter as his team built a 23-6 lead. Hart trimmed the lead to 13 points, 24-11, at the end of the first quarter.
Hart’s Cole Preston scored eight of his 16 points in the second quarter and helped Hart cut Quartz Hill’s lead to six points, 40-34, at halftime.
Hart was down by one point, 46-45, after Preston completed a three-point play with five minutes to play in the third quarter. But Quartz Hill went on an 8-0 run afterward and was up, 55-46, with 1:17 to play in the third quarter.
Hart went on an 8-0 lead of its own to finish out the third quarter and was down by one point, 55-54, at the start of the fourth quarter. Delgado hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the quarter. Preston came through again with a basket just before the buzzer to end the third quarter.
Delgado tied the game, 56-56, with a pair of free throws with 5:05 to play in the fourth quarter. Green gave his team the lead for the first time in the game, 58-56, when he converted a pair of free throws with 4:10 to play.
Austin Maly gave Hart a four-point lead, 61-57, when he hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter.
Gamiz tied the game again, 69-69 with a pair of free throws with a little more than a minute left in the fourth quarter. The game was tied, 69-69, at the end of regulation.
Delgado opened the overtime with a quick basket to put Hart up, 71-69. Quartz Hill launched three 3-point attempts on the next possession. All three missed. Delgado finally collected a rebound and was intentionally fouled by Gamiz.
Gamiz fouled out of the game and Delgado went to the free-throw line for two shots. Delgado made both shots and Hart retained possession. Delgado scored again and gave his team a 75-69 lead with 54 seconds left in overtime.
Hart will play Saugus, 60-53 winners over Grant, in the championship game of the Hart Holiday Classic tonight.
In other games at the Hart Holiday Classic, Glendale beat the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Students, 50-42. Camarillo beat Palmdale, 64-57.
