ONTARIO -- The St. Bernard girls' basketball team exacted its revenge bowling over Santa Clara, 60-45, in the championship game of the Division V CIF Southern California Regional at Colony High School on Saturday.
St. Bernard outscored Santa Clara, 21-12, in the fourth quarter and opened up a 16-point lead, its biggest of the game.
Playing in foul trouble for most of the second half, Lajauna Drummer scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds for St. Bernard. Her teammate Kacy Swain scored a game-high 15 points.
St. Bernard lost to Santa Clara, 52-49, in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA championship game two weeks ago at the Anaheim Convention Center.
St. Bernard will play for the Division V state championship in Sacramento next weekend. It will be St. Bernard’s seventh trip to the state championship game but its first since 2002.
“This is my first one,” said second-year St. Bernard coach Bo Corona. “We got over that hump finally.”
The Southern California Regional final was much more physical than the Southern Section championship game between the two teams. There were three technical fouls issued in the regional final. Santa Clara went to the free-throw line 35 times. Chanel Smith fouled out of the game.
Cynthia Hernandez scored a team-high 14 points for Santa Clara. She was 4-for-12 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line.
St. Bernard made 34 trips to the free-throw line. Neither team shot its free throws well. St. Bernard made only 18-of-34. Santa Clara was 19-of-35 from the line.
“The officials weren’t going to let much go today,” Corona said.
