The San Fernando baseball team is off to Las Vegas next week for the annual Durango Classic. Awaiting the reigning CIF City Section champions will be Sierra Vista, a team many consider the second best in the state of Nevada behind Bishop Gorman.
San Fernando coach Armando Gomez plans on starting Alonzo Garcia against Sierra Vista. Garcia, a sophomore, has emerged as the ace of the staff. Gomez doesn’t exactly have a designated No. 2 starter yet. Rather, he has been using a pitching staff by committee to fill in the gaps between Garcia’s starts.
Three pitchers combined to shut out Van Nuys Grant, 11-0, on Friday. Carlos Robles started the game and went three innings. Ruben Armenta came in for the next two and Miguel Hernandez pitched the seventh inning.
Isaac Dominguez provided the offense going 3-for-5 with two triples and drove in four runs. Garcia, who also plays the outfield, had a two-run double in his only at-bat.
Gomez says he hopes his team plays Chatsworth at some point during the Durango Classic. Monroe, Verdugo Hills and Sun Valley Poly are teams from the San Fernando Valley that are also entered in the tournament.
San Fernando (11-3) has won all four of its Valley Mission League games. Gomez said his team could easily be 13-1 overall.
“The three losses we’ve had, we probably should have won two of them,” Gomez said. The Tigers lost to Paraclete, 6-5, in the second game of the season. They lost 2-1 to Agoura on March 24. The only blowout was a 9-0 loss to Buena on Feb. 29.

WOODLAND HILLS – The smiles are coming a little easier for the players on the El Camino Real boys soccer team. The celebrations are a little more joyous. The wins are not as important and the time together on the field is all the more precious.
The memory of Francisco Rodriguez Jr., the El Camino Real goalie who was shot and killed in front of his house after a game against Taft on Jan. 11, still weighs heavy on the players.
Before El Camino Real’s game against Chatsworth on Monday night, the first home game since Rodriguez was killed, there was a 26-second moment of silence. Rodriguez wore No. 26 when he was on the El Camino Real soccer team.
The goal was empty before the start of the game, the same tribute paid to Rodriguez in the first game El Camino Real played at Cleveland of Reseda after his death.
After the kickoff, goaltender Randdi Misrahi ran onto the field and took his position. Once the game was under way, El Camino Real put on an offensive display scoring three goals in the second half in a 5-0 shutout over Chatsworth.
Lucas Ladek scored the first goal for El Camino Real (11-4-4) in the fifth minute. Erickson Penate put El Camino Real up 2-0 with a goal in the 17th minute.
The Conquistadors went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. Misrahi was barely tested in goal in the first half by Chatsworth. Once the second half started, El Camino applied more pressure, but didn’t score again until the 62nd minute.
Kayvon Parsa and Latif Al-kassir scored within three minutes of each other and gave El Camino Real a 4-0 lead. Mark Gomez knocked in the final goal for El Camino Real rebounding a shot that went off the goal post in the 73rd minute.
It was the 10th shutout of the season for El Camino Real. Misrahi has recorded two shutouts in the three games since the death of Rodriguez.
The game between El Camino Real and Chatsworth was originally scheduled for Friday, but was rescheduled because of the funeral for Rodriguez.
El Camino Real is 2-0-2 in its past four games and hasn’t lost since Jan. 5, 1-0, to Mililani in the Hawaii Invitational.
Chatsworth (0-5-3) lost its fourth game in a row.
L.A. North: George Lopez rings true for San Fernando baseball team

Fans, supporters and celebrities poured out in support of the San Feranando baseball team after the Tigers won their first CIF City Section championship since 1991.
San Fernando beat Chatsworth, 8-6, in the championship game at Dodger Stadium. But when it came time to buy rings commemorating their championship season, the players and parents didn’t have the money to pay for them. It was later discovered that the 1991 team was in the same boat and never received rings for the championship season.
The baseball players started selling T-shirts recognizing both championship teams, 20 years apart, to raise money for equipment, uniforms and hopefully rings.
That’s when comedian George Lopez stepped in. He graduated from San Fernando High in 1977 and played a little baseball when he was a student. He offered to buy the players their rings and help out raising funds for equipment.
At least the 2011 San Fernando players will have a precious memento from their championship season.

LOS ANGELES – Chatsworth scored twice without a hit in the fifth inning and won a wild CIF City Section semifinal playoff game, 4-1, over Birmingham at USC’s Dedeaux Field on Wednesday.
Down 1-0, Chatsworth loaded the bases in the fifth inning and scored on a squeeze play and a groundout to take a 2-1 lead.
Birmingham starter Kevin Torres hit three Chatsworth batters in a row to load the bases.
Jared Holley, the No. 9 hitter, drove in the first run on a squeeze play that scored Ricky Obando. Steve Karkenny followed with an RBI groundout that scored Kiefer Kofman.
Chatsworth starter Christian Lopez pitched into the fourth inning, but was taken out of the game with two outs and the bases loaded. Reliever Angel Rodriguez struck out Daniel Rivas to end the fourth and held Birmingham scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Birmingham took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Randy Medellin. He knocked in Torres, who led off the inning with a walk.
Torres kept his team in the game for the first five innings. He gave up only one hit in the five innings and struck out three.
But he ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. After giving up two runs and the lead in the fifth inning, Torres gave up another two runs in the sixth.
Raul Camas led of the inning with a single and came around to score on a botched pop-up in front of home plate. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Ernesto Prado hit a towering pop fly between the pitcher’s mound and home plate. Neither catcher Luke Jupp nor third baseman Erick Munoz could make the catch and Camas scored to give Chatsworth a 3-1 lead.
Pinch hitter Chris Carlin knocked in Obando with a one-out single to put Chatsworth up 4-1.
Chatsworth, winners of nine City Section championships, advances to the Division I title game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal involving El Camino Real and San Fernando.
