Inland Empire: Five things from the weekend

January, 10, 2011
1. The Rancho Cucamonga girls’ basketball team ended Etiwanda’s 66-game Baseline League winning streak Friday night, scoring a 48-39 victory at Rancho Cucamonga. The Eagles were playing without leading scorer Jada Blackwell, who reportedly had pneumonia, and guard Tatiana Parish, who had strep throat. Briana Baker scored 17 points to lead the Cougars and center Kourtney Ainsworth had 10. The streak dated back seven years.

2. Another girls’ team to watch is Rialto. The Knights improved to 15-2 on the season and 3-0 in the San Andreas League with 93-21 victory Friday night against Rialto Carter (5-10, 3-1). Janae Sharpe finished with 44 points, 13 assists and 15 steals, and Danae Williams, who came in second in the state in rebounding at 18.3 a game, had 22 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks for Rialto.

3. Add another name to the lost of top boys’ basketball players in the Baseline League. Royal Mathews, a 6-2 senior guard, scored 34 points Friday night in a 77-64 loss to Etiwanda in the league opener. Mathews scored 43 points earlier this season in a 95-91 victory against Vista Murrieta. The league already includes last season's co-players of the year, Byron Wesley of Etiwanda and John Gilliam of Upland.
