The defense on the Paraclete football team not only broke the school record for sacks in a season, it shattered it. The defense recorded 67 sacks, breaking the previous mark by more than 20.

It came as no surprise to Paraclete coach Norm Dahlia that six of his defensive players made the All-CIF Southern Section East Valley Division team.

Darian Thompson is the defensive player of the year. Three defensive linemen made the defensive first team. Defensive back Braydon Maish and linebacker Jonathon Tovar made the All-CIF team.

What did surprise Dahlia was that he was selected coach of the year and his team’s quarterback, Cameron Carvalho, earned offensive player of the year honors. That gave Paraclete a sweep of the top All-CIF spots in the East Valley Division.

“It means a lot,” Dahlia said. “I was very surprised. It’s a huge honor. I couldn’t have done it without the kids I had this year.”

Nine Paraclete players made the All-CIF Southern Section East Valley Division first team.

Carvalho threw for a school record 2,148 yards and 25 touchdowns in his senior season. He also rushed for 413 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games.

“He’s a special young man,” Dahlia said. “He took his lumps the season prior to earning the starting spot. He just took the reigns this year.”

Thompson was a triple threat for Paraclete. He had seven interceptions and 74 tackles playing defensive back. He caught 52 passes for 953 yards and 13 touchdowns as a receiver. As the team’s punter, he averaged 35.4 yards per punt and put seven inside the opposing team’s 20-yard line.

“I can’t say enough about him,” Dahlia said. “What a leader. Darian watched a lot of film. He made it very hard to throw hash mark to hash mark in the middle of the field.”

Thompson will continue his football career at Boise State in the fall.

Teammate and defensive lineman Lavonte Barnett, another All-CIF selection, is headed to Oregon State. Defensive linemen William Pretty and Andre Gonzales also earned spots on the All-CIF first defensive team.
