There are two new state powers in high school basketball. Alemany won its first CIF State championship over Sacred Heart Cathedral in the Division III boys final. Village Christian won its first state title over St. Joseph Notre Dame in the Division V boys final.

Alemany and Village Christian were the only two teams from the L.A. North region to win state titles. Alemany was one of the top teams in Los Angeles all season. Village Christian came alive late in the season with strong playoff runs in the Southern Section and state playoffs.

Here is a look at the top 10 from the L.A. North:
  1. Alemany (33-4) – The Warriors capped a historic season with a CIF State championship, the first in the 57-year history of the school. Alemany beat Sacred Heart Cathedral, 71-67, and had to rally after trailing by eight points at halftime. Alemany also won the Southern Section Division 3A championship and ended the season with a 10-game winning streak.
  2. Woodland Hills Taft (29-5) – The Toreadors won the City Section Division I championship in head coach Jason Hart’s first year. Taft reached the second round of the CIF Division I Southern California Regional and lost to a surprising team from Bullard of Fresno.
  3. Village Chrisitan (32-3) – The Crusaders won the CIF State Division V championship, 62-51, over St. Joseph Notre Dame, the alma mater of Jason Kidd. Village Christian has a couple stars on the rise on its roster. Sophomores Marsalis Johnson and Bryan Alberts should make the Crusaders a state title contender again next season.
  4. Calabasas (28-4) – The Coyotes won the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA championship over South Torrance and reached the second round of the CIF Division III Southern California Regional.
  5. El Camino Real (24-8) – The Conquistadores won the City Section Division II championship, 62-53, over Garfield. El Camino Real reached the second round of the CIF Division II Southern California Regional and lost to La Costa Canyon. La Costa Canyon advanced to the CIF State Division II final and lost to Archbishop Mitty.
  6. Royal (24-8) – The Highlanders reached the championship game of the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs and lost to Inglewood, 60-57. In the first round of the CIF Division II Southern California Regional, Royal lost to San Joaquin Memorial.
  7. Oak Park (25-9) – The Eagles reached the championship game of the Southern Section Division 3A playoffs and lost to Alemany. Oak Park won its first-round game of the CIF Division III Southern California Regional, 73-58, over Grant from Van Nuys before losing to Cathedral Catholic from San Diego in the second round.
  8. Thousand Oaks (21-10) – The Lancers became the darlings of the Southern Section playoffs reaching the Division 2AA semifinals. Thousand Oaks lost to Elsinore, 56-46, in the first round of the CIF Division II Southern California Regional.
  9. Renaissance Academy (27-7) – The Wildcats won the CIF Southern Section Division 7 championship and reached the CIF Division V Southern California Regional final, losing to Village Christian.
  10. Crescenta Valley (26-6) – The Falcons reached the semifinals of the Southern Section Division 1A playoffs and lost to Mission Viejo. They had a tough order in the first round of the CIF Division I Southern California Regional, going up against Mater Dei of Santa Ana, the eventual Division I state champion and the top-ranked team in the state and the ESPN Los Angeles poll. Richardson leads ECR over Colony

WOODLAND HILLS -- The similarities between Julian Richardson and his father, former UCLA star and NBA veteran Pooh Richardson, are many. Both on and off the court.

With his dad watching from the stands Wednesday, the younger Richardson gave spectators at El Camino Real High a glimpse of how the apple does not fall far from the tree in a Southern California Regional playoff game.

[+] Enlarge
Julian Richardson
Sean Ceglinsky for ESPNLA.comJulian Richardson, son of former UCLA star Pooh Richardson, had a big second half to lead El Camino Real to a win in the state tournament.
The up-and-coming sophomore guard scored 13 of his 23 points in the third quarter to help guide the Conquistadors to a 71-63 come-from-behind victory over visiting Ontario Colony in a Division II first-round game. Richardson also finished with five rebounds and two assists.

“I don't feel any added pressure, my dad has always taught me to be my own man,'' Richardson said. “He has been supportive and it's great having him around. I try to be a sponge and soak up some of his knowledge. He has helped me out with my game a lot over the years.''

That was apparent in the second half after Richardson got off to a particularly slow start for El Camino Real (24-7). Trailing by seven points at intermission, the 6-foot-3 underclassman heated up quick and scored 13 points over a six-minute stretch of the third quarter.

As a result, Colony (22-10) led 50-48 to start the fourth quarter.

Richardson got to work in the paint down the stretch. He was fouled multiple times and his handful of free throws helped the Conquistadors complete the comeback.

“My time is done on the basketball court, it's fun for me to sit back and watch my son play now,'' Pooh Richardson said. “You always want the best for your kids and I never told him that he had to follow in my footsteps. He does his own thing and I'm proud of him.''

Looking ahead in CIF state playoffs

Coaches never like to look ahead. But sportswriters do.

Here are some interesting potential match-ups in the CIF State Boys Basketball Southern California Regional playoffs that begin on Wednesday night.

Few teams have been able to beat Mater Dei, the top-seeded team in the Division I regional bracket. Woodland Hills Taft, the No. 3 seed team in the Division I playoffs, might be the one team to give Mater Dei some trouble if the two teams meet in the Division I regional championship game.

Taft has never made it past the semifinals of the CIF State regional playoffs. But first-year coach Jason Hart has his kids playing with a ton of confidence and freedom. This could be the year Taft dunks its way to the Southern California Regional final and perhaps a spot in the state championship.

No team from California has been able to beat Mater Dei this season. The only two losses for the Monarchs were against Grace Prep from Texas and Gill St. Bernard’s from New Jersey.

LOS ANGELES -- El Camino Real’s Julian Richardson made only one 3-pointer in the fourth quarter of the CIF City Section Division 2 boys championship game against Garfield on Friday night.

But his 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in El Camino Real’s 62-53 win over Garfield at the Roybal Learning Center.

“Julian can shoot from anywhere,” El Camino Real coach Dave Rebibo said. “These were tough, hard-minded kids who battled.”

Garfield took the lead for the first time in the game, 47-46, on a 3-pointer by Richard Castro. The score was tied three times early in the fourth quarter before El Camino Real started pulling away in the closing minutes.

Richardson finished with a game-high 27 points. While Richardson’s shot gave El Camino Real the lead for good, Maleke Haynes provided the dagger that put the game away.

He hit a 3-pointer, his only field goal of the game, with 1:30 left to play and gave his team a 55-49 lead.

“He just made a huge play,” Rebibo said. “That really kinda sealed the deal for us.”

Richardson was 1-for-5 from 3-point territory and scored only five points. His timely 3-pointer, combined with Garfield’s poor free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter, assured El Camino Real of victory.

Garfield was 3-for-11 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Even though Garfield had trouble making its free throws, the Bulldogs were down only two points in the final two minutes of the game.

Joe Joaquin and Francisco Aguilar each scored 15 points to lead Garfield.

Michael Thomas had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for El Camino Real.

“El Camino’s a stomping ground now,” Rebibo said. “It’s a team to be reckoned with.”

The Golden League is proving to be the giant killers in the Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs. Palmdale, Knight and Quartz Hill all pulled off first-round stunners. Quartz Hill scored the biggest shocker of the first round, knocking out fifth-seeded Oxnard.

As a result, Oxnard drops out of the L.A. North top 10 and Oaks Christian enters.

The Lions are in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs and meet La Verne Lutheran on Tuesday. Eric Cooper Jr., Lutheran’s highly touted junior, has a broken finger and is questionable for Tuesday night’s playoff game.

Here is a look at the L.A. North top 10:

  1. Woodland Hills Taft (24-3): The reigning City Section champs earned the No. 1 seed in this year’s playoffs and will face West Adams Prep in the first round Friday night. Taft has a 14-game winning streak and has not lost since Dec. 30. Newark Memorial beat Taft, 55-49.
  2. Alemany (23-4): The Warriors lost their Mission League finale, 81-62, to Harvard-Westlake. Still, Alemany is the Mission League champs at 10-2 and the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section Division 3A poll. The loss didn’t affect Alemany’s seeding in the Division 3A playoffs. The Warriors are the No. 1 seed and play Artesia on Wednesday in the first round.
  3. Calabasas (23-3): The Coyotes have won eight games in a row, including 65-61 over Westlake in the Marmonte League finale. Calabasas won the Marmonte League championship with a 13-1 record, the only loss coming to Westlake, 51-50, on Jan. 11. Calabasas was the No. 1-ranked team in Division 3AA and the top seed in the Division 3AA playoffs.
  4. Royal (20-6): The Highlanders ended Marmonte League play with a five-game winning streak. Royal beat Agoura, 78-55, in the league finale Thursday night.
  5. El Camino Real (18-7): The Conquistadores are the No. 1 seed in the City Section Division II playoffs and have a five-game winning streak. El Camino Real finished in second place in the West Valley League standings. The only team that gave ECR any problems was Taft, the top seed in the City Section Division I playoffs. A potential semifinal match-up against Kennedy, the co-champions of the Valley Mission League, looms for El Camino Real.
