Los Angeles Preps: Hayden Higgins

Mission Viejo began the season as one of Orange County's most highly regarded teams, but the season didn't live up to expectations. The playoffs are.

The Diablos scored an 11-7 victory Tuesday over fourth-seeded Santa Barbara, sending Mission Viejo (22-13) to the Southern Section Championships for Division 2 on Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Dodger Stadium. The Diablos will face Etiwanda, which scored a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Arcadia,

Mission hammered out 16 hits against the Gauchos, and they were helped mightily by a five-run third inning.

Parker Anderson had a two-run double and Jake Kaluris hit a two-run homer in the third inning.

Anderson had three hits, scored two runs and drove in three. Danny Poe also had three hits.

Anthony Shew (6-0) came on in the fourth inning after Santa Barbara cut a 7-2 deficit to 7-5. She earned the victory with four innings of one-hit relief.

Division 3

Woodbridge 2, Culver City 1

Brandon Horth (7-3) gave up five hits, all in the first two innings, as Woodbridge (19-11) continued its remarkable run with a victory at Culver City (16-13-1). Four years ago, when Horth was a freshman on the varsity, the Warriors were 5-21. Now, they're a game away from winning a section title. It will be an all Pacific Coast League championship as they will play Beckman for the fifth time this season. Woodbridge won the only nonleague game between the two teams.

Ben Wylly and Brandon Smith both had two hits and scored a run. Matt Schneble and Matt Budgell had the RBIs.

Division 6

Oxford Academy 8, Bishop Union 7

Catcher Hayden Higgins stole home in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind victory over fourth-seeded Bishop Union. Oxford Academy, trying to win its third consecutive Southern Section championship, had tied the score with Higgins' two-out, two-run triple that put him in position for his mad dash.

Oxford (26-2) will play Pasadena Poly, a 5-1 winner over Lancaster Desert Christian. They play Saturday, 3:30 p.m., at UC Riverside.

Oxford overcame a 6-0 deficit to score the victory. In the quarterfinals, the Patriots overcame a 5-1 deficit to beat Brentwood. In that game, Oxford scored seven runs in the sixth inning.

In this game, they scored five runs in the sixth to overcome a 7-3 deficit.
