SAN FERNANDO – Armando Gomez decided to gamble a bit in the first round of the City Section Division I baseball playoffs against Granada Hills.

The coach of the San Fernando baseball team, the reigning City Section champion, went with his No. 2 starter, Kevin Martinez, opting to save his ace, Alonzo Garcia, for the second round.

The CIF City Sectional Division I baseball semifinals will be an all-San Fernando Valley affair.

Top-seeded Chatsworth plays a surprising Birmingham team in the first game. Second-seeded El Camino Real, the reigning City Section champion, faces an underappreciated San Fernando team in the other semifinal.

Birmingham, the 12th-seeded team in the City Section playoffs, is coming off a 3-2 win over Granada Hills. Kevin Torres hit a two-run home run and earned the save for Birmingham.

Chatsworth beat Woodland Hills Taft, 5-2, behind a strong performance from Aaron Brown on the mound and at the plate. Brown started the game and struck out eight. He also had two hits, a two-run single and an RBI double.

San Fernando scored three runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 5-3 win over Kennedy of Granada Hills.

Kevin Martinez delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning. San Fernando starter David Lira went the distance and teammate David Garcia had three hits.

El Camino Real needed a little late-inning magic to beat Narbonne, 6-5. Narbonne took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run by Chris Ortega.

Chris Nicholson hit a home run, had a three-run double and went 3-for-4 for El Camino.
