Dan Berry, one of the most successful high school softball coaches in California, died from complications resulting from a brain injury on Wednesday at Verdugo Hills Hospital. He was 66.
Berry guided the Crescenta Valley softball team to its only CIF Southern Section championship in 1986 and was the softball coach at the school for 27 years.
Berry compiled a 570-117 record as the Crescenta Valley softball coach. He was 240-24 in the Pacific League. He also coached the Pierce College softball team and was hired as the coach of the L.A. Mission College softball team in 1998.
Mike Bertram, the associate principal at Crescenta Valley High School, said Berry was a good man and great role model.
"He was here sun up to sun down," Bertram said. "He was a constant figure on this campus. The man was at every athletic event and supported all the kids. The kids knew what they got with him."
