GRANADA HILLS – The Granada Hills girls volleyball team made the CIF state tournament for the second year in a row.
And for the second straight year, Granada Hills made a first-round exit.
Redondo Union swept Granada Hills, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17, at Granada Hills High School on Tuesday night in the first round of the CIF State Division I playoffs.
Redondo Union was forced to start sophomore setter Olivia Bustamante when the team’s regular setter Blake O’Brien was too sick to make the bus trip from Redondo Beach to the San Fernando Valley for the state girls volleyball tournament match.
Bustamante made the first start of her high school on one of the biggest stages. She guided her team by recording 41 assists and ran the offense smoothly against the two-time CIF City Section champions.
Bustamante said after the game she was nervous to start, but found her comfort zone by feeding the ball to Skylar and Lara Dykstra.
The Dykstras combined for 23 kills in the match and overpowered Granada Hills at crucial points.
Lara Dysktra had the hot hand in the first game, recording four kills. The first game was close, tied 16-16, when Redondo scored six points in a row to build a little cushion. Skylar Dykstra ended the first game with one of her three kills in the game.
Skylar Dykstra continued to roll in the second game. She recorded five kills as Redondo built a 23-13 lead at one point.
In the third and deciding game, Skylar Dykstra recorded four kills in a row as Redondo jumped out to a 15-3 advantage. She ended the match with her sixth kill of the game.
Skylar Dykstra had 14 kills and Lara Dykstra added nine. Teammate Nicole White had eight kills.
Hanna Levanen ended the match with a team-high seven kills for Granada Hills.
