Potential good news for the football teams in the Foothill League and Golden League, but bad news for the lower-tier teams in the Marmonte League.
The Southern Section is considering moving the 10 teams in the Marmonte League to the Pac-5 Division, the top division in the CIF Southern Section, according to a report in the LA Times.
For Oaks Chrisitian, St. Bonaventure and Westlake, the move might be welcome. For teams like Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Newbury Park, moving to the Pac-5 Division might make it nearly impossible to win a CIF championship.
Marmonte League teams have won the past three Northern Division championships. St. Bonaventure won back-to-back Northern Division titles in 2007 and 2008 when the Seraphs were in the Channel League.
With Marmonte League teams out of the Northern Division, the Foothill League, Golden League and Bay League would remain. The Pac-7 League would be added to the Northern Division, according to a proposal from the Southern Section office. The last Foothill League team to win a CIF championship was Canyon in 2006, the first year the Northern Division was established.
Canyon also won the CIF Southern Section Division II championship in 2005. Hart, another team from the Foothill League, won the Division II championship in 2003.
Part of the discussions involve moving the Sunset League teams out of the Pac-5 Division and into the Southwest Division.
