Thomas, Chen qualify for state golf

November, 11, 2011
Drew Thomas from Oxnard and Sophia Chen from Thousand Oaks qualified for the CIF state girls golf tournament at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach.

Chen was one of two golfers to win a two-hole playoff at the CIF/WSCGA Southern California Regional at The Golf Club in Murrieta. She birdied the second playoff hole, sinking a 15-foot putt on a par-3 hole, and eliminated Erin Choi of Torrance.

Six golfers, including Chen, tied for ninth place with 4-over 76s. The top-nine golfers advanced to the CIF state tournament.

Sandy Choi from Torrey Pines was the only golfer to shoot under par. She won the WSCGA regional with a 2-under 70. Megan Kim of Mira Costa was second at even par 72.

Thomas was the surprise qualifier of the tournament. She lost in a playoff and missed the cut at the Southern Section regional at the Talega Golf Course in San Clemente. But she was allowed to enter the WSCGA regional when one of the golfers declined to compete.

Thomas shot a 3-over 75 in the WSCGA tournament.

Tiffany Yau of Van Nuys, the City Section champion, lost in the six-player playoff. She shot a 4-over 76, but was eliminated from advancing on the first playoff hole.

The CIF state final at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach is Tuesday.
