CHIVAS USA: Angel trade finalized

August, 16, 2011
Juan Pablo Angel's trade from the Galaxy to Chivas USA has been completed, and an announcement is expected to be made Wednesday, according to source close to the situation.

Angel, 35, reported through his Twitter account that he trained with Chivas for the first time Tuesday and that his new teammates made him feel “very welcome.”

Chivas USA closed its practice Tuesday, and a team spokesman, asked if Angel had participated, said the session was closed to the media relations staff and that “as far as we know, he wasn't there.”

A release was slated to go out Tuesday but was held up until the league office can approve the wording, the source said. Angel, meanwhile, was on the Galaxy's roster -- but not the 18-player game roster -- for Tuesday night's CONCACAF Champions League clash against Honduran club Motagua at Home Depot Center.

The Galaxy, which will pick up a supplemental draft pick in the trade, was forced to deal Angel after signing Irish forward Robbie Keane from Tottenham. Keane, who will take Angel's Designated Player slot, is in England awaiting his visa, and L.A. does not have to make a roster move until Keane is to be officially placed on its roster. The Galaxy is expected to pay a significant portion of Angel's salary.

Messages left for Chivas general manager Jose Domene and head coach Robin Fraser were not returned.
