THURSDAY, AUG. 18

  • TELEVISION

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
APOEL (Cyprus) at Wisla Krakow (Poland)
Fox Deportes, noon

The world's greatest club competition will soon be down to the big boys and a few wanna-bes, but it's the depth of the participation pool -- with clubs from every country -- this early in the season that makes the CL so special. Even on one-day tape delay. Replays: Fox Soccer Channel, 3 p.m.; Fox Soccer Plus, 6 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Also
Racing Genk (Belgium) at Maccabi Haifa (Israel), Fox Deportes, 8 a.m.; Fox Soccer Channel, 1 p.m.

COPA SUDAMERICANA
Universidad de Chile (Chile) at Fenix (Uruguay)
Fox Deportes, 3 p.m.
Eduardo Vargas
' second-half strike lifted the Chileans in their home leg of this first-stage series in South America's No. 2 club competition. Hold on, and they'll get another, better, foe from Montevideo -- powerhouse Nacional -- in next month's second stage.
Also
Juan Aurich (Peru) at La Equidad (Colombia), Fox Deportes, 5:30 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Toronto FC at Tauro (Panama)
Fox Soccer Channel, 5 p.m.
The Reds might as well be at season's start, given the massive roster rollover during Aron Winter's first season in charge, but that's not a bad thing. Canada's top club looks like it's starting to secure a foothold, for the first time in its five years, and it might give the favored Panamanians a battle. Replay: midnight.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
D.C. United at Chicago Fire
ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 6 p.m.
Dwayne De Rosario
's arrival is transforming D.C. into -- dare we say it -- a title contender, and although it sits sixth in the Eastern Conference (and out of MLS's playoff zone), Columbus and Philadelphia need be wary. If this ends even, the Fire sets an MLS mark for ties, with their 15th (in 24 games).

FRIDAY, AUG. 19
  • TELEVISION

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION
Pachuca at Estudiantes Tecos
Galavision, 6:10 p.m.
Herculez Gomez
was finally finding his way at the end of the spring campaign with Pachuca, but the Tuzos' uncharacteristic struggles last season led to an overhaul. Now the former Galaxy striker takes on his former club.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

COLLEGE WOMEN
Long Beach State at USC
McAllister Field (Los Angeles), 3 p.m.

USC's Ali Khosroshahin and Long Beach's Mauricio Ingrassia have plenty in common: Both played at Cal State Fullerton and made their mark in the Big West Conference, Khosroshahin at Fullerton before guiding the Women of Troy to the 2007 NCAA title. Big expectations for both sides, as always, as the women's college season officially begins.

Utah at Cal State Fullerton, Titan Stadium (Fullerton), 7 p.m.
