ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP
Leeds United at Brighton & Hove Albion
Fox Soccer Plus, 11:40 a.m.

Brighton is hardly among England's storied sides, but its American fans have had plenty of reason to celebrate this week: two TV appearances! The Seagulls faced Liverpool in a League Cup clash Wednesday, also on the Plus, and now take a 5-1-1 second-division make against Leeds. Replay: 7 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Philadelphia Union at Sporting Kansas City
Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 5:30 p.m.
The battle for the Eastern Conference regular-season title looks like it will be a real thriller, and the winner here -- if there is a winner -- will overtake Columbus for the top spot. A draw would keep the Crew in first heading into its clash Saturday against the Galaxy.

All of England is abuzz over footy in Manchester, with United atop the EPL table at 5-0-0 and City second at 4-0-1. They've scored 21 and 17 goals -- more than double everybody else's totals. American goalkeeper Tim Howard and Everton look to halt the Blues' run.
Also

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Galaxy at Columbus Crew
Fox Sports West, 4:30 p.m.
It could be a battle between conference leaders, except there's a game Friday (Philly at Sporting KC) that could drop the Crew to No. 2 in the East. Not that Columbus is playing much like winners at the moment, with just one point from its last four games (and 13 goals conceded). The Galaxy, inching closer to a second successive Supporters' Shield, have a bigger game Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League, so a reserve lineup is likely.
Also
Houston Dynamo at FC Dallas, Telefutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 1 p.m.

Portland Timbers at New York Red Bulls, MLS Direct Kick, 4:30 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS
COLLEGE MEN
Whittier at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Pritzlaff Field (Claremont), 1 p.m.

This might have been a showdown for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference lead, but the Stags were upset by cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, and Whittier's Poets lost at home to Redlands, which now sits atop So Cal's D3 conference.
Also

Pomona-Pitzer at Chapman (Orange), 7 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Toronto FC at Chivas USA
Home Depot Center (Carson), 7:30 p.m.
The surging Reds -- might they be finally finding themselves under Aron Winter -- come to So Cal looking to eliminate the Goats from MLS's playoff race. Juan Pablo Angel is scoring now, and Dan Kennedy is sensational in the nets, but it won't halt the inevitable.
TV: KWHY/Channel 22 and KDOC/Channel 56
