March 8/9: What to watch, where to go

3/8/2012

THURSDAY, MARCH 8

  • TELEVISION

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE

Udinese (Italy) at AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands)

GolTV, noon

Jozy Altidore's club form has bounced from sensational to careless at AZ this season, but he could be the pivotal figure as the Dutchmen look to open Europe's No. 2 club competition's round of 16 with a victory.

Also

Besiktas (Turkey) at Atletico Madrid (Spain), GolTV, 10 a.m.

Athletic Bilbao (Spain) at Manchester United (England), GolTV, 2 p.m.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Atletico Nacional (Colombia) at Godoy Cruz (Argentina)

Fox Deportes, 4:30 p.m.

Colombia's top team has routed its first two Group 8 foes in South America's club championship, and success in Mendoza will all but ensure expected passage to the knockout phase.

Also

Internacional (Brazil) at Santos (Brazil), Fox Deportes, 10 a.m.

Velez Sarsfield (Argentina) at Deportivo Quito (Ecuador), Fox Deportes, 12:30 p.m.

Emelec (Ecuador) at Flamengo (Brazil), Fox Deportes, 2:30 p.m.

Bolivar (Bolivia) at Junior (Colombia), Fox Deportes, 7 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Pumas UNAM (Mexico) at Isidro Metapan (El Salvador)

Galavision, 5 p.m.

The Cats' meandering form in the Mexican Primera Division should be of no consequence here -- they're heavy favorites to win this quarterfinal couplet and advance to an all-Mexico semifinal. A victory in Central America would make next week's second leg academic.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS PLAYOFFS

Crescenta Valley at Millikan

Millikan High School (Long Beach), 4 p.m.

The Rams won the Southern Section's top title, and unbeaten Crescenta Valley, from La Crescenta, captured the Division 4 crown. A semifinal classic could be on tap in the CIF Southern California Regional Championships.

Also

Santa Ana Valley vs. St. Augustine (San Diego) at Centennial Park (Santa Ana), 4 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS PLAYOFFS

El Camino Real at Aliso Niguel

Aliso Niguel High School (Aliso Viejo), 4 p.m.

The L.A. City Section's best takes on the Southern Section's top side -- one of the top two sides, at least -- in a semifinal showdown in the CIF Southern California Regional Championships.

Also

St. Lucy's Priory (Glendora) vs. Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) at Santa Ana Stadium, 3 p.m.

FRIDAY, MARCH 9

  • TELEVISION

ITALIAN SERIE A

Chievo Verona at Inter Milan

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

Michael Bradley and the Flying Donkeys are on a bit of a roll, with a three-game unbeaten streak capped by last weekend's draw at undefeated Juventus. Inter's spiral has hit nine games, and Europe is looking increasingly impossible next year. Replay: FSC, 5 p.m.

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION

America at Club Tijuana

Azteca America (KAZA/Channel 54), 5:55 p.m.

Second-place America and the fifth-place Xolos, both with just one loss in nine games, tangle in the most anxiously awaited match in Estadio Caliente history. Might it be a playoff preview?

Also

Toluca at Morelia, Fox Deportes, 6 p.m.; Azteca America (KAZA/Channel 54), 8 p.m.

Liga de Ascenso

Altamira at Correcaminos, GolTV, 6:30 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS PLAYOFFS

Oaks Christian vs. Marymount

Warren High School (Downey), 5 p.m.

The CIF Southern California Regional Championship title game is a rematch of last week's Southern Section Division 4 final, in which Oaks Christian, from Westlake Village, used two early Bianca Deardorff goals to pull out a 2-1 victory. Marymount, from Bel-Air, hopes to upset the Lions for the closest thing to a state title available in California.

Boys

Crossroads (Santa Monica) vs. McFarland, 7:30 p.m.
