MONDAY, MARCH 12

  • TELEVISION

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Newcastle United at Arsenal
ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 12:55 p.m.

Talk around north London centers on whether an agreement to nab German forward Lukas Podolski from Cologne -- and whether he's stepping in because Robin van Persie is exiting -- has been finalized. And that amazing almost-comeback from a four-goal deficit in last week's Champions League clash with AC Milan.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Philadelphia Union at Portland Timbers
ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 6:30 p.m.
Portland has perhaps MLS's most rabid fan base, and it will be out in force for the rising Timbers' league opener against Philly's youngsters.
  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

CLUB EXHIBITION
Chivas USA vs. L.A. Blues
Home Depot Center Track and Field Stadium (Carson), 11 a.m.

The Goats' reserves take on the USL Pro's local entrant, a fill-in game after the Galaxy -- in the middle of a difficult slate of games to start the campaign -- postponed the scheduled MLS Reserve League clash.

TUESDAY, MARCH 13
  • TELEVISION

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Basel (Switzerland) at Bayern Munich (Germany)
Fox Sports West, Fox Soccer Plus and Fox Deportes, 12:30 p.m.

The Swiss pulled a huge upset in the first leg of this round-of-16 home-and-home, taking a 1-0 advantage on Valentin Stocker's late goal. It's disaster if Germany's giant can't respond at home. Replays: Fox Soccer Channel, 3 and 8:30 p.m.; Fox Soccer Plus, 5:30 p.m.
Also
Olympique Marseille (France) at Inter Milan (Italy), Fox Soccer Channel, 12:30 and 5 p.m.; Fox Soccer Plus, 3 and 9 p.m.; Fox Deportes, 3 p.m.; Prime Ticket, 3:30 p.m.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Everton at Liverpool
ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 12:55 p.m.
Only two points separate these Merseyside rivals, and Liverpool has lost twice since claiming the League Cup trophy. Everton wishes it still had Landon Donovan, who would have completed his loan deal at Anfield had the League Cup title game not forced a 17-day postponement.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Morelia (Mexico) at Monterrey (Mexico)
Galavision, 7 p.m.
Defending champion Monterrey is in command of this quarterfinal series after winning last week's away leg, 3-1, as Humberto Suazo scored twice in the first half. The victor takes on Mexico City's Pumas UNAM or El Salvador's Isidro Metapan in the semis.

COPA LIBERTADORES
Defensor Sporting (Uruguay) at Guadalajara (Mexico)
Fox Deportes, 8:30 p.m.
It's been a tough winter every which way for Chivas, which sits last in Group 7 with one point from two games. A win at home would keep the club in position to make the knockout round.
Also
Nacional (Uruguay) at Alianza Lima (Peru), Fox Deportes, 6 p.m.
