Four U.S. national youth teams are in or about to begin training camps, three of them at Home Depot Center in Carson, and several local players are involved:
  • The U-20 women's team, guided by UCLA women's head coach Jill Ellis, has a two-week camp in Carson and Chula Vista that begins Saturday at Home Depot Center. It will play two games against New Zealand's U-20s in Carson and two games against Mexico's U-20s at the ARCO Olympic Training Center near San Diego. The camp is preparation for the July 13-Aug. 1 FIFA Women's U-20 World Cup in Germany, in which the Americans -- among the title favorites -- will meet Ghana, Switzerland and South Korea in group play.
  • The U-18 women's team will on Sunday begin a one-week camp at Home Depot Center, the first step toward the 2012 U-20 Women's World Cup. Coach Dave Chesler has included several players from the U-17 side that failed to qualify for this year's World Cup, falling on penalties to Canada in the semifinals, despite outscoring opposition, 38-0. The team has three games scheduled, one against the U-20s.
  • The U-15 boys national team is in Buenos Aires the next week, with games slated against Argentinos Juniors, Argentine and Bolivian youth national teams and a Rosario state select team.
  • The U-14 boys are in a week-long camp at Home Depot Center and will be playing U-15 teams from Southern California clubs.
