April 18/19: What to watch, where to go

4/18/2012

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18

  • TELEVISION

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Barcelona at Chelsea

FX and Fox Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

Is anyone not anticipating a Barca-Real Madrid meeting in the May 19 title game in Munich? Besides fans of Chelsea and Bayern? Lionel Messi has been unstoppable for the Catalans, scoring 14 goals in this competition. Replays: Fox Soccer Channel, 2 p.m.; Fox Deportes, 3 p.m.; Fox Soccer Plus, 9 p.m.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Nacional (Paraguay) at Cruz Azul (Mexico)

Fox Deportes, 6 p.m.

Mexico City's Cementeros have already booked passage to the knockout stage of South America's club championship, and Nacional is finished. So this Group 6 finale is merely a tune-up, although victory -- and an upset of first-place Brazil's Corinthians in the other game -- would give Cruz Azul the group title.

Also

Union EspaƱola (Chile) at Junior (Colombia), Fox Deportes, 4 a.m.

Zamora (Venezuela) at Boca Juniors (Argentina), Fox Deportes, 10 p.m.

Fluminense (Brazil) at Arsenal de Sarandi (Argentina), Fox Deportes, midnight

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Sporting Kansas City at Vancouver Whitecaps

MLS Direct Kick, 7 p.m.

Sporting is only the third team in MLS history to start 6-0-0, and it has conceded only one goal in doing so. Vancouver is coming off a bye week after giving up three goals in eight minutes following a 427-minute shutout streak to begin the season.

Also

Montreal Impact at D.C. United, MLS Direct Kick, 4:30 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Santos Laguna (Mexico) at Monterrey (Mexico)

Fox Soccer Channel and Telefutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 7 p.m.

As much as fans around these parts would have loved to see the Galaxy in the regional club title series, this is the matchup we expected and perhaps hoped for. The defending champs are home in the first leg against the club that led the Mexican League until Saturday's loss to America.

THURSDAY, APRIL 19

  • TELEVISION

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE

Athletic Bilbao (Spain) at Sporting Lisbon (Portugal)

GolTV, noon

It's an all-Iberian final four in Europe's No. 2 club competition, and this is the only semifinal match not taking place in Spain. Sporting has defended well in the tournament, but the Basques come in averaging two goals per game and already have taken care of Manchester United and Schalke. Replay: midnight.

Also

Valencia (Spain) at Atletico Madrid (Spain), GolTV, 2 p.m.

COPA LIBERTADORES

The Strongest (Bolivia) at Santos (Brazil)

Fox Deportes, 3:30 p.m.

Fourteen of 16 knockout-stage berths have been determined in South America's club championship, but both Group 1 slots are available. The Strongest, one of the best-monikered teams on the planet, need to win (doubtful) and hope Internacional fails to beat Peru's Juan Aurich (doubtful, too). Otherwise, the Brazilians claim both.

Also

Deportivo Tachira (Venezuela) at Corinthians (Brazil), Fox Deportes, 1 p.m.

Atletico Nacional (Colombia) at Universidad de Chile (Chile), Fox Deportes, 6 p.m.

Internacional (Brazil) at Juan Aurich (Peru), Fox Deportes, 11 p.m.
