June 12/13: What to watch, where to go

6/12/2012

TUESDAY, JUNE 12

  • TELEVISION

2012 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Russia at Poland

ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

Poland started crisply, then watched it all fall apart, then held on for a draw in their Group A opener against Greece. Russia's another matter, clearly the class of the quartet. Replays: ESPN2, 5 p.m.; ESPN Deportes, 1 a.m.

Also

Greece vs. Czech Republic, ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 8:45 a.m.

2014 WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

Mexico at El Salvador

Telemundo (KVEA/Channel 52), 6:30 p.m.

Mexico cruised in its CONCACAF qualifying opener, with a little more magic from Giovani Dos Santos, although the scoreline (3-1 over Guyana) hardly satisfied. The Salvadorans will put up a fight at home. Replay: 9:30 p.m.

Also

Cuba at Panama, ESPN Deportes, 6 p.m.

2014 WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

United States at Guatemala

Pay-Per-View, 7 p.m.

The Americans did what they needed to do in their qualifying opener Friday night, but impress? Hardly. They'll require more spark to deal with the conditions in Guatemala, where no game is simple. The situation at left back could be key.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13

  • TELEVISION

2012 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Netherlands vs. Germany

ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

The Dutch couldn't finish and were beaten by pesky Denmark. The Germans waited until almost the end before Mario Gomez beat Portugal. This long, bitter rivalry -- the most anticipated of the group-stage matchups -- has increased in importance following Group B's openers. Replay: ESPN Deportes, 5 p.m.

Also

Denmark vs. Portugal, ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 8:45 a.m.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Corinthians (Brazil) at Santos (Brazil)

Fox Deportes, 5:30 p.m.

Neymar's presence gives Santos a certain caché, but Pelé's old club has had to overcome first-leg losses in the first two knockout rounds in South America's club championship. Corinthians, the top remaining seed as the semifinals begin, played two scoreless draws in its away legs, then won the series at home, where it'll be next week.
