Chivas USA won't play its U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal at Home Depot Center, opting to return to Cal State Fullerton, where the Goats last played a home game in the competition.
The club Thursday confirmed that Titan Stadium would be the site of the June 26 clash with the Charlotte Eagles, a third-division club that plays in the USL Pro. Chivas has won road games against the fourth-tier Ventura County Fusion and second-division Carolina RailHawks in its first two games in the competition.
U.S. Soccer, which must approve all venues, had announced the game would be held at HDC, but Chivas' website listed the site as undetermined until this week.
The Goats beat the second-tier Austin Aztex, 1-0, at Fullerton in a third-round game en route to the 2010 semifinals. Their only other home game in the 99-year-old competition was played in Goleta, at UC Santa Barbara's Harder Stadium. Dallas-based amateurs Roma FC advanced on penalties after a scoreless draw.
Chivas also played a 2008 SuperLiga game against the New England Revolution, a 1-1 draw, at Fullerton.
Titan Stadium, which seats 10,000, is a more intimate venue than HDC, and the rent is cheaper. It was universally considered Southern California's best smaller soccer venue (and, thus, best soccer venue) for more than a decade and has been No. 2 on the list since HDC opened in 2003.
The Galaxy have played nine home U.S. Open Cup (most recent: last year's third-round win over the L.A. Blues), three CONCACAF Champions League and two friendly matches at Titan Stadium. The U.S. national teams, men's and women's, have used the facility, and it is the L.A. Blues' primary home.
Charlotte, a Christian club affiliated with La Mirada-based Premier Development League team Southern California Seahorses, lost to the Blues at Fullerton in May 2011. The Eagles do not have a road game against the Blues this season.
WORTH NOTING: German winger Sebastian Stachnik, 26, who played last season with Dutch third-division club Helmond Sport, is on trial with Chivas. The Hertha Berlin product has played for Kaiserslautern, lower-level German clubs Rot-Weiss Essen and Sportfreunde Lotte and for the second teams at Hertha, Hannover 96 and Kaiserslautern. Also on trial are former Goats defender Bobby Burling, Brazilian midfielder Tiago Luzardi and Scottish left back Scott Morrison, whose stay was extended beyond last weekend. ... Left back Ante Jazic went the full 90 for Canada in its World Cup qualifier Tuesday against Honduras, a 0-0 draw in Toronto. Midfielder Oswaldo Minda was a late substitute in Ecuador's 1-0 win over Colombia in a qualifier Sunday. Both are back for Saturday night's game against Real Salt Lake at Home Depot Center. ... Chivas Academy standouts Adonis Amaya (Westminster/Westminster HS) and Bradford Jamieson (Los Angeles/Santa Monica HS) are on the U.S. under-17 national team roster for the June 24-July 1 Copa Saprissa Internacional in Costa Rica. Both are on summer break from residency with the U-17s in Bradenton, Fla., and have trained with Chivas' first team.
