July 4/5: What to watch, where to go

7/4/2012

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4

  • TELEVISION

COPA LIBERTADORES

Boca Juniors (Argentina) at Corinthians (Brazil)

Fox Deportes, 5:30 p.m.

Romarinho's late goal answered Faucundo Roncaglia's just a dozen minutes earlier, and Corinthians exited Buenos Aires with a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the final in South America's club championship. That gives it the advantage heading into the decisive clash in São Paulo.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Seattle Sounders at Real Salt Lake

MLS Direct Kick, 7 p.m.

Here's a Fourth of July treat: Two struggling giants looking to right things in a Western Conference showdown. The Sounders haven't won in eight MLS games, since early May. RSL has dropped three in a row, the first two at home.

Also

Sporting Kansas City at Montreal Impact, MLS Direct Kick, 4 p.m.

Toronto FC at FC Dallas, MLS Direct Kick, 6 p.m.

Vancouver Whitecaps at Colorado Rapids, MLS Direct Kick, 6:30 p.m.

Philadelphia Union at Galaxy, KDOC/Channel 56 and KWHY/Channel 22, 7:30 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

USL PREMIER DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Fresno Fuego at Ventura County Fusion

Ventura College, 1 p.m.

The Fusion are streaking to the Southwest Division title, but their aim is a second PDL crown in four years. With Gyasi Zardes, Francisco Lopez and Travis Bowen pouring in goals, that's doable. First they look for a sweep of last year's divisional champ.

USL W-League

Colorado Rush at Santa Clarita Blue Heat, Valencia High School (Valencia), 4 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Philadelphia Union at Galaxy

Home Depot Center (Carson), 7:30 p.m.

The Galaxy are a Fourth of July tradition in So Cal -- this is their 17th annual “Fireworks Extravaganza,” and they usually do the job on the field, too. Just one loss since HDC opened in 2003. No David Beckham this time: He was suspended following that stupid yellow card in the weekend loss at San Jose.

TV: KDOC/Channel 56 (English) and KWHY/Channel 22 (Spanish).

THURSDAY, JULY 5

  • TELEVISION

ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE

Michigan Hawks vs. CASL Chelsea Ladies

GolTV, 5 p.m.

There is no Development Academy for girls yet, so the ECNL fills the void. The under-17 final was taped six days earlier.
