July 7/8: What to watch, where to go

SATURDAY, JULY 7

  • TELEVISION

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Houston Dynamo at Sporting Kansas City

MLS Direct Kick, 5 p.m.

The Dynamo have played only three road games since their stadium opened two months ago, and didn't win any of them. K.C. is a tough place to play, and Sporting's speed and athleticism won't make the test any easier.

Also

Portland Timbers at Real Salt Lake, MLS Direct Kick, 6 p.m.

San Jose Earthquakes at FC Dallas, MLS Direct Kick, 6 p.m.

WOMEN'S PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE

Ajax America at Beach FC

Home Depot Center Field 5, 3 p.m.

Beach FC needs to beat the San Diego SeaLions by at least two goals in a showdown Sunday to win the Pacific-South and advance to the playoffs. But first the Long Beach club must tame longtime South Bay powerhouse Ajax, and it needs to score four or five goals just in case the race comes down to goal difference.

USL W-League

Colorado Rapids at Santa Clarita Blue Heat, Valencia HS (Valencia), 7 p.m.

NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE

San Diego Flash at FC Santa Clarita Storm

Canyon High School (Canyon Country), 5 p.m.

The unbeaten Flash have won the Southern Conference title, and the Storm are one point above Fullerton Rangers in the battle for the conference's other Western Division playoff spot. Santa Clarita likely needs an upset win in its regular-season finale to claim it.

USL Premier Development League

Fresno Fuego at Pali Blues, Palisades HS (Pacific Palisades), 7 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Vancouver Whitecaps at Chivas USA

Home Depot Center (Carson), 7:30 p.m.

The Goats have been off for two weeks, getting healthier and preparing for the Whitecaps, who were blown out at HDC two weeks by the Galaxy, their only loss in the last seven games. Chivas has upgraded its attack but is still waiting for results: Its 11 goals are low for the league.

TV: KDOC/Channel 56 (English) and KWHY/Channel 22 (Spanish).

SUNDAY, JULY 8

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Galaxy at Chicago Fire

ESPN and ESPN Deportes, noon

L.A. has lost back-to-back games after winning three in a row, and they travel to take on a dynamic Fire team in great form -- without suspended David Beckham. The MLS All-Star First XI, sure to include Beckham, will be announced at halftime.

ESPN Deportes, 2 p.m.

We're going to play spoiler here and acknowledge the mastery of the Spaniards, who captured their third straight major title with a surprisingly one-sided romp over the Azzurri a week ago. Here's a replay.

Brazilian Brasileirão

Gremio at Cruzeiro, GolTV, noon

Mexican Primera Division

Santos Laguna vs. Leon, Azteca America (KAZA/Channel 54), 5 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION

Santos Laguna vs. Leon

Home Depot Center, 5 p.m.

L.A. fan favorite Herculez Gomez returns to Home Depot Center with Mexico's reigning champion, which takes on Mexico's other reigning champion -- Leon, rejoining the top division after capturing the second-tier Liga de Ascenso crown -- in a preseason friendly.

USL PRO

Orlando City SC at L.A. Blues

Titan Stadium, Cal State Fullerton, 5 p.m.

The Blues have lost four in a row and are dropping down the third-division league's standings, and they lost forward Bright Dike to injury in Friday's defeat to the Floridians, who have lost just one league game all year.

USL W-League

Colorado Rush at Pali Blues, Cal State Fullerton, noon

NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE

San Diego Boca at Fullerton Rangers

Santa Ana Stadium, 5:30 p.m.

As long as FC Santa Clarita doesn't upset the San Diego Flash on Saturday, Fullerton is playing for a playoff berth here -- and it needs a victory.

Women's Premier Soccer League

Beach FC at San Diego SeaLions, Cathedral Catholic HS (San Diego), 2 p.m.

L.A. Vikings at Ajax America, Nansen Field (Rolling Hills Estates), 3:30 p.m.
