July 11/12: What to watch, where to go

7/11/2012

WEDNESDAY, JULY 11

  • TELEVISION

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Vancouver Whitecaps at Toronto FC

MLS Direct Kick, 4 p.m.

These Canadian rivals are in very different places: The 'Caps are in fine shape for a Western Conference playoff berth with half a season to go, and TFC is still looking for its third victory of the season -- and any opportunity to escape the Eastern Conference cellar. One very bright spot for the Reds: Dutch striker Danny Koevermans.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

USL W-LEAGUE

Seattle Sounders at Santa Clarita Blue Heat

Valencia High School (Valencia), 7 p.m.

The Sounders, minus their big-name national-teamers, arrive in Southern California for three games, the first against last year's Western Conference regular-season champion. It's been a tough campaign for Blue Heat, which has a decided Portuguese flavor, with national-teamers Edite Fernandes, Ana Borges and Laura Luis.

USL PREMIER DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Ventura County Fusion at Pali Blues

Palisades High School (Pacific Palisades), 7 p.m.

The Fusion can clinch the Southwest Division title with a victory over last-place Pali, which is coming off a fine victory that knocked defending champ Fresno out of the playoff chase.

Also

FC Tucson at Southern California Seahorse, Biola University (La Mirada), 7 p.m.

THURSDAY, JULY 12

  • TELEVISION
