Alta Loma's Carlos Bocanegra made his Ligue 1 debut for Saint-Etienne, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 loss at Paris-St. Germain as France's top league kicked off its season.
Bocanegra, who starred at Alta Loma High School and UCLA, is one of two Americans in Ligue 1. Forward Charlie Davies, who hasn't played since suffering a multitude of injuries in a car accident last October, was not on Sochaux's game roster in a 2-1 victory over AC Arles Avignon.
Sochaux plays at Saint-Etienne on Saturday.
BRITAIN: Former UCLA star Brad Friedel, one of the top goalkeepers in England, heads into this weekend's Premier League opener without his coach. Martin O'Neill resigned unexpectedly Monday as Aston Villa's boss, and reserve-team coach Kevin MacDonald will lead the club in Saturday's opener at home against West Ham United. Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner owns Aston Villa.
Rangers FC, with Fontana's Maurice Edu (Etiwanda HS), opens its Scottish Premier League season Saturday at home against Kilmarnock.
ELSEWHERE: Huntington Beach's Sacha Kljestan, who moved in June from Chivas USA to RSC Anderlecht, has played in the Belgian champions' first two Jupiler League games. The former Huntington Beach High School standout came off the bench in a 4-1 romp over KAS Eupen in the opener, then started and played 56 minutes in last weekend's scoreless draw at Charleroi.
Irvine's Benny Feilhaber (Northwood HS/UCLA) did not play in AGF Aarhus's scoreless tie at Velje in its second-tier Division 1 opener.
