This Week in Soccer

9/14/2010

  • ON TELEVISION

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Group play starts in the best competition of them all, and thanks to the Fox channels, 10 of the 16 games will be on the tube -- not all of them live, of course. Man United-Rangers has the most compelling storyline, although we'll see if Rangers (with Fontana's Maurice Edu) can make a game of it. The game we're most interested in: AC Milan-Auxerre. But that's just us.

Tuesday

Inter Milan (Italy) at FC Twente (Netherlands). TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 11:30 a.m. (replay, 1 a.m.); Fox Sports en Español, delayed, Thursday, 8:30 a.m.

Panathinaikos (Greece) at Barcelona (Spain). TV: Fox Sports en Español, 11:30 a.m. (replay, 6 p.m.); Fox Soccer Channel, delayed, Wednesday, 6 p.m.

Wednesday

Auxerre (France) at AC Milan (Italy). TV: Fox Sports en Español, delayed, 6 p.m.; Fox Soccer Channel, delayed, 11 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Seven of the week's eight group-stage games will be available on one channel or another, with, curiously, only Cruz Azul's clash with Panama's Arabe Unido not yet claimed. Check around the channels Wednesday night at 7, odds are it'll be somewhere. The highlight, at least north of the border: MLS rivals Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC tangling in Group A.

Tuesday

Joe Public (Trinidad & Tobago) at Columbus Crew (MLS). TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 5 p.m.

Marathon (Honduras) at Monterrey (Mexico). TV: TeleFutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 5 p.m.

Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) at Saprissa (Costa Rica). TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 7 p.m.

Toronto FC (MLS) at Real Salt Lake (MLS). TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 7 p.m.

Thursday

FAS (El Salvador) at Olimpia (Honduras). TV: Galavision, 5 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: The Galaxy and D.C. United once were among MLS's biggest rivals, perennial battlers for silverware (with D.C. coming out on top more often than not). Now it's just the best vs. the worst. Chivas USA's matchup is more interesting: K.C. has been pretty good the past month or so. But the game to see is Thursday night's battle between the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas, a potential MLS Cup preview -- they're two of, say, five clubs (along with the Galaxy, Columbus and Real Salt Lake) with a genuine shot at winning the title.

Fox has the best of Italy (Inter Milan), plus London clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham United. And ESPN Deportes offers Hercules, who somehow beat Barcelona last week, taking on another big Spanish club (Valencia).

Women: Florida at Duke. TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 5:30 p.m.

MEXICAN LEAGUE: Almost everything here is preliminary to Sunday morning's showdown between Toluca and America, giants who are battling for control of Group 2 in the Primera Division's Apertura.
