The Galaxy announced its list of players who are protected in anticipation of Wednesday's MLS expansion draft as the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps begin to add players to their teams heading into next season.
Teams are allowed to protect 11 players, and another can be added to the protected list if one of their players is taken. No more than two players can be taken from any existing club.
Here are the players the Galaxy will protect:
M David Beckham, M Chris Birchall, F Edson Buddle, D A.J. DeLaGarza, F Landon Donovan, D Todd Dunivant, D Sean Franklin, D Omar Gonzalez, M
Juninho, GK Donovan Ricketts, M Michael Stephens.
Additionally, forward Tristan Bowen was automatically protected as a member of the Generation adidas program. Bowen was the Galaxy’s only Generation adidas player in 2010 and did not graduate from the program, meaning that he will be classified as a Generation adidas player again for the 2011 season.
That leaves 12 players on the unprotected list, and they are:
D Gregg Berhalter, M Alex Cazumba, F Bryan Jordan, M Jovan Kirovski, M
Chris Klein, M Dema Kovalenko, D Leonardo, M Eddie Lewis, F Mike Magee, D Yohance Marshall, , GK Brian Perk, GK Josh Saunders.
Soccer blogger Scott French will have more breakdown and analysis later.
