Chivas USA finally found the net, going ahead of New York on an own goal by Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

Chivas was unable to create an effective attack most of the first half, then nearly scored in stoppage, but the Goats took a 1-0 lead not quite two minutes into the second half.

Jesus Padilla's shot from Chukwudi Chijindu feed deflected off a New York defender and ricocheted off the right post as Coundoul went the other way with the shot. The ball bounced back into the goalmouth, spinning toward the net, and Coundoul knocked it in while trying to grab it.

Padilla, who came on in the 39th minute after left back Ante Jazic sustained a minor right-knee sprain, was responsible for Chivas' chance at the end of the first half, too. He played a long ball over New York's back hey, there's an idea! and Chijindu, on the left side of the box, fired just wide of the left post.

It was an otherwise dreadful first half for Chivas USA, which showed virtually no ability to get within 25 yards of the net until Chijindu's chance. The Goats had decent possession but couldn't penetrate in the losses to Colorado and the Galaxy.

Jonathan Bornstein dropped to the backline when Jazic was hurt, and Padilla went to left midfielder. Maykel Galindo came on for forward Maicon Santos in the 58th minute.

New York managed just one shot on goal in the first half, a weak header from defender Tim Ream following one of five Red Bulls corner kicks, but penetrated several times and had two good opportunities, in the 18th and 32nd minutes. On the first, a Joel Lindpere corner kick fell into the goalmouth in front of Macoumba Kandji, who couldn't get a shot off. Kandji headed high from 10 yards off a Lindpere's cross on the second.

Lindpere tested goalkeeper Zach Thornton in the 67th minute, half-volleying a throw in from the left flank. Thornton had to back-pedal to slap the ball away from the upper-right corner.

Chivas leads, 1-0, in the 70th minute.
