SATURDAY, DEC. 11

  • TELEVISION

SPANISH LA LIGA

Villarreal at Getafe

ESPN Deportes, 8:55 a.m.

Villarreal is the best team in Spain not called FC Barcelona or Real Madrid, and their big star is an American. Sadly, it's not Jozy Altidore, but rather Giuseppe Rossi, the New Jersey-born and -bred forward who chose Italy's national team over ours. Replay: 5 p.m.

Other games

Almeira at Sevilla, GolTV, 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and midnight

Atletico Madrid at Deportivo La Coruña, 1 and 9 p.m.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Liverpool at Newcastle United

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 9:30 a.m.

Liverpool's medical staff says Steven Gerrard -- the best of all English players -- is ready to go, but Reds boss Roy Hodgson says no way. That's good news for the Geordies, who haven't won in more than a month. Replay: Fox Deportes, 4 p.m.

United Arab Emirates' top team crushed the Oceania champions to reach the quarterfinals of FIFA's club championship, but they'll find South Korea's premier club -- the Asian champs -- a far tougher foe. The winner gets Euro champ Inter Milan in the semis. Replay: Fox Deportes, 11 p.m.

SUNDAY, DEC. 12

  • TELEVISION

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Chelsea at Tottenham

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 8 a.m.

There's been a bit of hand-wringing at Chelsea, with four losses in the first 16 games -- and that leaves the Blues just two points behind fellow Londoners Arsenal, who are on top with, yes, four losses. Lot more parity in the EPL these days, it seems. Who else has four losses? That's right, fifth-place Tottenham, London's No. 3 team. Replay: Fox Deportes, 5 p.m.

Other games

Birmingham City at Wolverhampton, Fox Soccer Plus, 5:30 a.m.

Blackburn at Bolton, Fox Soccer Plus, 7:30 a.m.

ITALIAN SERIE A

Lazio at Juventus

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

The second-place Romans head to Turin to take on the third-place Old Lady, and both are looking for Serie A leader AC Milan to falter. How good is Fabio Quagliarella? We think Lazio is about the find out. Replay: Fox Deportes, 11 p.m.

Other games

AC Milan at Bologna, Fox Soccer Plus, 3:30 a.m.; Fox Deportes, 10 a.m.

Bari at AS Roma, Fox Soccer Channel, 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Fox Deportes, 6 a.m. and 3 p.m.

COLLEGE MEN

NCAA Final: Louisville vs. Akron

ESPN2, 1 p.m.

Virginia was pretty good back when Bruce Arena was in charge, and those San Francisco teams of the 1970s and '80s were truly special. But give it up for Akron, which is in its second successive NCAA final. Only No. 1 Louisville sits between the Zips and a trophy, and we're guessing it's either a classic or an Akron romp.

COLLEGE MEN

NCAA College Cup Final

Louisville vs. Akron

Harder Stadium, UC Santa Barbara (Goleta), 1 p.m.

What could be better than No. 1 (the Cardinals) vs. No. 2 (the Zips)? That both sides like to play attractive, flowing, attacking soccer. And a title game in warm weather. Worth the hike north.
