Three bits of news:
  • NCAA champion Akron will be playing in Cal State Northridge's annual tournament next summer. The Zips, who captured the Division I title Sunday at UC Santa Barbara will face the Matadors and Cal State Fullerton in a four-team event tentatively slated for Labor Day weekend. UNLV will be the fourth team.
  • Midfielder McCall Zerboni (San Clemente/San Clemente HS and UCLA) signed with the expansion Western New York Flash of Women's Professional Soccer. Zerboni played with the L.A. Sol in the league's inaugural season and with Atlanta in year two.
  • U.S. Soccer announced the first of its annual awards, and Galaxy captain Landon Donovan was the big winner. His last-minute goal to beat Algeria and send the U.S. into the World Cup's round of 16 was voted the year's best goal and the dogpile that followed was selected best celebration. Best team performance: The U.S. vs. Algeria.
