MEXICO: Chivas advances, America doesn't

5/9/2011

Guadalajara fans are celebrating this weekend: Their heroes knocked off the top seed in the Mexican Primera Division's playoffs, and hated rival America is out.

Mexico City's Cruz Azul and Pumas UNAM, and Morelia, a favorite in Santa Ana, also advanced to the Clausura final four, and Club Tijuana took another step toward joining Mexico's top league this summer.

Chivas completed its first-round upset of top seed UANL Tigres with a 1-1 draw Saturday in San Nicolas, outside Monterrey, advancing to a semifinal showdown with No. 2 Pumas UNAM on 4-2 aggregate. It's the third straight season in which the No. 1 seed failed to advance from the quarterfinals.

Hector Reynoso scored for Guadalajara, knocking home the rebound after Marco Fabian de la Mora followed up off the post after his penalty kick was saved.

Morelia tamed America, Mexico's biggest club, using two Joao Rojas goals and a Rafael Marquez Lugo penalty kick in a 3-2 triumph Sunday nioght to finish a 5-3 aggregate triumph.

Morelia will face Cruz Azul, which held Atlante scoreless in Cancun after a 2-1 win in the midweek opener.

Pumas overcame a two-goal deficit from the first leg, toppling Apertura champ Monterrey, 2-0, Sunday as Javier Cortes set up headers for Efrain Velarde in the sixth minute and Luis Fuentes in the 73rd. UNAM moved on as the higher seed.

Semifinals will begin Tuesday and Wednesday with second legs next weekend.

LIGA DE ASCENSO: Club Tijuana has two chances to claim a spot in the Primera Division after steamrollering top-seeded Leon in the second-tier Liga's semifinals.

The Xolos will face Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Irapuato in the title series after following its 1-0 midweek victory in Estadio Caliente with a 2-0 romp, on goals by Joshua Abrego and Luis Orozco, Saturday night in Guanajuato.

Tijuana, which won the fall Apertura title, will be home for Wednesday's first leg in the Clausura final and head to Irapuato, also in Guanajuato, for Saturday's finale.

If the Xolos win the Clausura, they will -- pending official approval of their home ground -- be in the top tier next year. If Irapuato prevails, the clubs will play twice more, a midweek game in Irapuato followed by a May 21 or 22 finale in Tijuana, with the victor headed to the big league.

Tijuana dominated the match in Leon, which was down to nine players after red cards in the 26th minute to Blas Perez and 67th to Juan Gonzalez. Unhappy fans rioted late in the game, and officials had to evacuate women and children onto the field.

Irapuato overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit on goals by Ariel Gonzalez, his 13th of the Clausura but just his first since March 19, and Juan Arellano.

AMERICANS ABROAD: Former Chivas USA star Jonathan Bornstein's first season in Mexico is finished with Tigres' elimination. The midfielder from Los Alamitos and UCLA did not play in the decisive draw against Guadalajara and saw just 274 minutes of action -- barely more than three full games' worth -- over seven appearances during the Clausura. … Sacramento-born Miguel Angel Ponce, Guadalajara first-choice left back, is the lone American headed to the Primera semis. … Texan Sonny Guadarrama made his first Clausura start for Atlante. ... Joe Corona went the distance for Tijuana.

COPA CALL: Jaguares opens its Copa Libertadores quarterfinal series Thursday in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, against Paraguayan power Cerro Porteño. The second leg will be played in Asuncion the following Thursday.
